Software to try

08 August 2004

Noted in various pc mags:

* Zoot software. Talks on the website about pairing with outllook and newsgator to handle rss feeds – which is my rss config. * File Viewer. Apparently a good way to browse/view files. * ThumbsPlus. Supposedly handles RAW files better than most photo viewers.

At the Tomb of the Inflatable Pig

05 August 2004

At the Tomb of the Inflatable Pig : Travels Through Paraguay is absolutely the best Paraguay travelogue that I have ever read.

OK I’ll go further, it was a very entertaining travelogue period. Gimlette has a good dry style, which is needed for book about a country with such a tragicomic history. Paraguay seems to have a pretty unfair share of misadventures, some of its own making, and sometimes buffetted by outside forces.

During this election season, everytime you worry about our system of government – pick up this book and read a chapter or two. You will feel better.

Major blog spam today

Someone is using a new tool to get around my simple obfuscation techniques. I’ve deleted 30+ comments today. Time for new strategies. Probably time to upgrade to MT3.

Tonight's reading

02 August 2004

* 1 Km bluetooth transfer – hmm I wonder if one could take over a bluetooth keyboard at a PC… * Keyscan remapping – wow I need this to make my japanese import machine work well – generating an underscore or tilde from the stock keyboard is tricky. * Ceramic lenses – sounds to me like digital cameras get even thinner. * Videogame advertising – this is going to be big. Videogamers spend a LOT of minutes in front of a game. * Find Your Spot. Ha, I filled it out, it suggested Seattle…

Pneumatic tidbits

28 July 2004

* SMC part number decoding. I wish I had had this last year before i applied AC to a DC solenoid. The “-5” that I referred to has nothing to do with the negative 15 VDC terminal on your power supply. I was referring to the “dash five” in your SMC part number, VF3130-5xZ where, 1 - 100 VAC, 2 - 200 VAC, 3 - 110 to 120 VAC, 4 - 220 VAC, 5 - 24 VDC, 6 - 12 VDC, 7 - 240 VAC, 9 - Other * Buy pneumatic couplings online at Homier * OK not that pneumatic but here is a circuit design for driving something with sound – some people suggest hooking this to “a solid-state relay (110 VAC) or a Darlington sink driver (12 or 24 VDC) in order to switch your solenoid valve”.
