A Little Ludwig Goes a Long Way

A smattering of opinions on technology, books, business, and culture. Now in its 4th technology iteration.

Security and Trust

09 May 2003

I like the observations about security and trust at SATN.org: Comments from Bob Frankston, David Reed, Dan Bricklin, and othersHumans gain trust by interacting and “getting to know” people. Transparent technologies that make it easy to see what people and companies are up to (in a sense the opposite of firewalls) are what help me trust. I like Reagan’s saying: “trust, but verify”. It implies that trust requires means for openness, not firewalls and secretiveness.

Pitt in the Big 10?

08 May 2003

Derek thinks the Big10 should invite Pitt to join if the Big East collapsese – BallBlog: Conference Shuffling. Gosh I would hold out for Notre Dame still. I was never that impressed with Pitt as an institution when I lived in Pittsburgh, I just don’t know that they bring much allure to the Big 10.

Yes I know my layout sucks

06 May 2003

BTW yes I know I am basically using the sucky default MT template and that my right column behaves for crap once it gets to the bottom of my posts, at least if you are using IE. I am just too lazy to fix, and eventually my list of posts will grow long enough to fix it. it is amazing to me that MT ships with such a broken template.

Matt's Famous Chili Dogs

06 May 2003

Hot DogsAte lunch at Matt’s today with some of the ignition gang. The relish on this dog is not a color found in nature – very reminiscent of Green Apple Jolly Ranchers.

cd30 Network MP3 Player

05 May 2003

I installed the cd30 network mp3 player today. i’ve been playing around with for an hour or so now.

What to like: well it is nice being able to listen to all my music at my stereo location. no more dragging cds around.

What not to like: the interface doesn’t work very well for a 1000+ artist collection like mine. there is no visual interface, just a remote and voice prompts. the remote permits tegic/t9 style entry of artist names and album names so you can get around ok, but there is no visual feedback at all, just voice response, so it is pretty tedious to get thru a large collection.

Also, I could not get the 802.11 link to work. I probably had the wrong ssid or wep settings. or actually the more i think about it, our 802.11 net is outside our firewall, while my cd30 server is inside the firewall, so i probably had firewall problems. whatever, it didn’t work.

Like with the hp media receiver, to get the best out of this device, i need to go author playlists explicitly for the device so that it is easy to navigate my content.
